My New Hunter Fan and a Room Refresh Giveaway!

 

 

 

Last weekend we changed out our old light fixture in our dining room to a ceiling fan.  The room has three windows, but none of them open.  More than once, I've looked across the table at my son  and he's sweating!  Yes, we definitely needed a change!

 

 

 

 

 

 

We decided on the Hunter Fan Company's Claymore 54" ceiling fan with the light kit.  We ordered it on a Friday and it was here before the following weekend.  It took less than an hour from start to finish to take the old fixture down and install the new fixture. 

 

 The new fan looks amazing!  And with multiple speeds, it can create a little airflow or can cool the room really well!  It's quiet too!  And it has turned my son into a more relaxed man at the dinner table!  No more boiling as he eats...  :)

Fall in the Dining Room

 

Although I love summer, I can embrace the warmth of fall and the beauty of the changing seasons.  I just wish that cold, snowy winter didn't follow beautiful fall!

 

I was in HomeGoods recently and found this bushel of wheat.  I love that it has some height and texture. 

 

 

I put it in this grower's box that I bought at Barb's sale this summer.  I added leaves, gourds, cobs and acorns to the box. 

 

 

 

 

 

Also at HomeGoods, I found these great bowls in the shape of a leaf.  Add in some plaid napkins and my fall table is ready to go!

Bringing Home Some Family Heirlooms

 

 

 

Last week we headed to Oregon for my son's college graduation.  

We also spent some time in Southern Oregon helping my Dad go through some of his things.  He was kind enough to let us take these pieces that mean so much to me.  The dry sink has been in my parents' house as long as I can remember.  I'm guessing that this picture is from the early 60's. 

I think it still looks amazing after 50+ years!

We were able to make the drive home in 11 hours and everything made it safely.

Besides the dry sink, we were also thrilled that he gave us this church pew.  I'm thinking that Bailey (the cat) will discover it soon and have it as his 'watching the neighborhood' seat.

Simple Spring Table

I am so excited for nice weather to arrive!  It's been beautiful here for the past few days, but snow is forecast again next week, so we're not quite there yet. 

 

In the meantime, I can make my dining room feel like spring.

 

 

 

 

I started with white dinner plates and added these yellow salad plates from Pier 1.  I found the plaid napkins at HomeGoods.  The napkin rings were an eBay purchase a few years ago. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The tulips and daffodils are looking so pretty.  I'm excited that this picture shows the sky at "Blue Hour".  I learned about that from  Susan @ Between Naps on the Porch.

 

Our dining room is the first room you see when you walk in.  It's so fun to see the spring colors in here!

Burlap Table Runner--PB Look @ DIY Price

A few weeks ago I was in Pottery Barn and found a jute table runner.  I had been looking for one and was very happy to find it on sale.  I brought it home and it was way too big for my table.  I love the texture of jute, burlap, etc and kept looking for one, but didn't want to pay lots and lots.... Last night I saw this post by Kristen @ Ella Claire Inspired and was so excited to make a runner myself.

I went to JoAnn's today and bought 4 yards of burlap.  I followed Kristen's directions and it turned out great!

I started out by washing it with Tide and some bleach to get rid of the smell.  I had to do a second load with a little more Tide and two rinses.  It still smelled a little, but wasn't horrible.  I took it outside and draped it over some chairs for about an hour.  Before I brought it back in the house, I really tried to shake it out.  There were burlap fibers flying everywhere!  :)

I then did a rough measurement of it, pulled a string from it and cut carefully along that line.  I cut it down the middle with the same technique.  Because it was so long, the string broke a couple of times.  I put on my reading glasses (haha!) and used a pin to find the string and started carefully pulling it again.  Once I had it out, I again carefully cut lengthwise.  I made it about 20" wide by 90" long for my 80" table.



I ironed it with my eurosteam.  I tried to use a normal iron set on Silk, as Kristen did, but wasn't getting anywhere.  It came out nice and smooth this way.

I set it on the table and did a final measurement.    I cut it so it'd hang a few inches over the edge of the table.  After that, I carefully pulled about 8 strings off, one at a time, to make the fringe.  This part was really easy.

And that was it!! 

I paid $10 for the burlap and can make two runners.  $5 for a runner is perfect in my book!  It sure beats paying $50 for the one at Pottery Barn.  Thank you Kristen!

I was in Michael's today and found this bird/candle holder for 90% off. 

I added some topiaries that I made and now have a simply decorated table for fall.  Now if I can just keep the cat out of there....  :)

Simple Garden Themed Tablescape

I hate to admit it, but sometimes it's just too hot to eat outside here during the summer.  When it is, we eat in the dining room.  I love anything with birds or garden themes, so it was fun to put this tablescape together.

I used a birdcage, some plants and several cast iron birds in the center.

I found these adorable garden plates and bowls at The Dollar Tree several years ago.  I only bought four of each and am now so disappointed that I didn't buy more.  A friend gave me the little napkin holder pots and napkins.  I think they are so cute!  I got the placemats at Kohl's.  I love the texture of them.

I was in Pottery Barn last week and they had these bird nest place card holders for $1.87 for four.  I bought the last two sets.  I'm not sure if I'll keep all eight as place card holders or maybe just use some as bird nests. 

I am looking forward to serving dinner in here tonight!
